We Appreciate Our Volunteers!

Monday, April 19th, 2010

We want to express our deep and heart-felt thanks to you for your wonderful and generous gifts of time, energy and support as a volunteer at Union Station Homeless Services. You are an integral part of the success of every aspect of our work. Without your dedication, our many programs to help rebuild the lives of men, women and children simply would not be possible.

As an individual volunteer, or a member of one of more than eighty community Adopt-a-Meal groups, you truly have been instrumental in Union Station’s ability to serve over 170,000 meals a year, including the 8,500 meals served at our Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners-in-the-Park! Or, perhaps you are one of our volunteers who offer their professional expertise to improve the lives of our clients. Maybe you answer our phones, help with data entry or provide the person-power to produce our mass mailings. Perhaps your group has organized a food drive or donated other gifts-in-kind which offset the cost of our programs.

Whatever your role here, we are sincerely grateful for your participation as a volunteer. Your efforts are essential to the success and well-being of Union Station as we work together toward our lifesaving goal of helping our clients achieve a permanent end to their homelessness.

With warmest wishes,

Margo Kidushim

Thanksgiving Dinner-in-the-Park Recap

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

While the proverbial dust is still settling from another successful Thanksgiving Dinner-in-the-Park, we are already hard at work on our next community event: Christmas Dinner-in-the-Park. More details will be available on our website in the coming weeks. To tide you over until then, here are a few statistics and a link to photos from Thanksgiving Day.

  • -Approximately 5,000 meals were served at on Thanksgiving Day to people who were homeless, senior citizens, alone at the holidays, or unable to afford a holiday meal.
  • -Approximately 2,000 volunteers pre-registered online through our new pre-registration system.
  • -350 turkeys were cleaned and cooked prior to Thanksgiving Day with more being donated the day of the event.
  • -342 cars dropped off food at Central Park (many dropped off multiple food donations).
  • -We couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of our community!

We Appreciate Our Volunteers

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Each year Union Station Homeless Services’ volunteers donate their time, providing everything from food service to office support to professional services. Their support is equivalent to 15 full-time staff members.

On Saturday, July 18, Union Station celebrated the dedicated volunteers who make our work possible. Our Volunteer Appreciation Picnic included an afternoon of festivities, food and fun at Farnsworth Park in Altadena.

CEO Marvin Gross, COO Cynthia Foster, Volunteer Coordinator Marisa Albanese and members of the Volunteer Committee expressed their deep gratitude to our volunteers, thanking them for their tireless work and devotion to Union Station’s clients. Volunteers also heard from a Union Station resident, who explained how their support helped him rebuild his life.

Special honors were given to the volunteer who has worked with us the longest (Laurence Eggers), the individual who travels the farthest to volunteer (Alison Reynolds), and the volunteer who works the greatest number of shifts each week (Zahid Khan).

Volunteers were treated to a fabulous BBQ feast provided by Union Station’s Food Service Manager, Charles Bedell, and his staff. At the end of the day, volunteers left feeling full, appreciated and happy.

Thanks to all those who attended the picnic. We love our volunteers!
