TARGET CORPORATION
The Target Corporation's Pasadena and West Hollywood stores play a major role in Union Station Homeless Services' In-Kind Donations Program. Target's contributions account for over 30% of our annual In-Kind Donations, which translates to over $100,000 annually.
Target offsets our expenses by regularly contributing items such as detergent, soap, shampoo, deoderant, diapers, microwaves, fans, canned food, trash bags and cleaning supplies, allowing more of our budget to go toward programs and services for our clients.
Target maintains a commitment to assisting non-profits that provide help to those who are in need. Union Station salutes Target for supporting us in offering help and hope to the men, women and families whose lives are transformed through our programs. We appreciate their many contributions to Union Station and to the non-profit community in Pasadena.

volunteer: 'VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT: IN REMEMBERANCE
Union Station mourns the loss of two long-time Adult Center volunteers - Irving Willner and F.E. "Dutch" Holland. We celebrate their lives and contributions to Union Station.
Irving Willner, 1923 - 2006
"He was The Bread Man." That's the way Charles Trotter, Union Station Homeless Services' In-Kind Donations Manager, remembers the loveable, faithful volunteer Irv Willner. For seven years, Irv came to Union Station's Adult Center. His main responsibility was accepting bread donations and organizing the bread in the pantry, straightening the loaves on the shelves and taking any excess to the Senior Center near his home.
Other volunteers also enjoyed talking to Irv. "He always talked politics with the Wednesday group," said Wendy Bienvenue, Union Station's Food Services Manager, "and he love his granddaughter. He always talked about her."
Whenever he was at the Adult Center, Irv had a constant ritual: "shooing" away the pigeons from the property. "The pigeons were his arch nemeses," said Aarin Edwards, Union Station's former Director of Community and Volunteer Programs. "He chased them away because he cared so much about maintaining a clean and healthful environment for our clients."
Irv was also a part of Union Station's Volunteer Committee. Committee members warmly remember his role during the meals the group served together. "He was usually the first person to arrive, with a big pot of spaghetti sauce," said Aarin. "I will miss him dearly and will alsways remember him," added Charles. Executive Director Marvin Gross also fondly remembered Irv. "Irv was kind, upbeat, animated and always engaging. He had a lifelong commitment to social justice and progressive causes. Volunteering to feed the hungry and homeless was totally in keeping with who he was. Irv was a mensch," Marv recalled, "a good person."
F.E. "Dutch" Holland, 1927 - 2006
Most people wouldn't know who you meant if you asked about Fredrick Holland at Union Station. But their faces light up when "Dutch" is mentioned. Dutch Holland volunteered faithfully at Union Station Homeless Services' Adult Center kitchen for 15 years. Every Friday morning at 6:40 on the dot Dutch would come in ready to do his part: cutting onions and bell peppers, and preparing the mear for the day's lunch that would feed about 200 of the community's poor and homeless. "In all the years he volunteered with us, he missed three days, and that was to fulfill another commitment he'd made as a volunteer with another agency," said Wendy Bienvenue, Union Station Homeless Services' Food Services Manager. "He also helped us during our annual Dinners in the Park, carving turkey and ham. He was a great man, dedicated and faithful."
In-Kind Donations Manager Charles Trotter also remembered Dutch warmly. They spoke about Dutch's past career as a Professor of Sociology and about his brother, a butcher who had taught Dutch the skills of carving. "Dutch was always in a vibrant mood on Friday mornings," shared Charles. "I cherish the time I spent with him, and will surely miss him."
"Volunteers like Dutch add so much to our agency," explained Tami Kimball, Union Station's Director of Community and Volunteer Programs. "To believe in a cause the way Dutch did and to dedicate as much time as he did was wonderful. We appreciate all his hard work and we'll miss him. We're glad that we had the chance to know him."

Union Station volunteers are a varied group; they come in all ages, religions, ethnic backgrounds and stages of life. They are so different from each other, yet it is what they have in common that makes them stand out: each one of our volunteers is compelled to action by a spirit of generosity. Their hands perform a variety of tasks - sweeping the floor, chopping vegetables, washing laundry, serving a plate of food, wiping a child’s tears. All humble tasks to be sure, but each one is accomplished with great care and compassion, as if it might matter and be remembered decades from now. As if caring for others is the obvious choice.
